How often it is that we use the word ‘heart’ and a hundred phrases related to it in our everyday lives. Now that we have an option to share colourful, animated heart emoticons to our friends and loved ones, it has always been a very special place and the most vital organ for all of us. So to commemorate this very essential organ of our system , ‘World Heart Day’ is observed on 29th September every year. Created by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day aims to inform people and educate them about the importance of heart health and also the common causes that lead to heart conditions and diseases. In May 2012, world leaders committed to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025 and hence, World Heart Day came into existence.

It is helpful in highlighting the various risks and also the actions that can be taken for prevention of and to control cardiovascular diseases. The day aims to initiate action informing people of the preventive measures that can be taken to avoid any risk to their hearts and eliminate habits that pose as a hazard to the health of the heart like- tobacco usage, consumption of unhealthy food and lack of physical activity.
This year, the theme for World Heart Day 2020 is ‘Use your heart to beat heart-diseases.” As a global campaign, World Heart Day aims to connect different individuals, families, communities, governments all around the world to take collective action against informing and educating the people about the impact of an unhealthy lifestyle on cardiovascular health. The Covid-19 pandemic has already taught us the importance of the healthcare industry and the need for being attentive to one’s own health. So this World Heart Day, let us pledge to following a better lifestyle, because only if your heart is healthy, so are you!
